Most basement floods we see in the GTA trace back to a pump that was undersized for the actual inflow, a pit that holds too little water so the motor short-cycles, or a discharge line that dumps too close to the foundation and recirculates. We measure your pit dimensions, watch how fast water enters during the visit, and match horsepower, switch type, and check valve to that reality. We also confirm the discharge runs far enough out and pitches away from the wall so the same water is not pulled back in. If your storm risk is high, we plan the pit and lid around a future battery backup sump pump so power outages during a storm do not become a flooded basement.

The final number is usually driven by storm exposure, groundwater pressure, discharge routing, and how the basement actually takes on water. Older housing, finished basements, buried discharge routes, power-outage risk, and permit-sensitive work can all move the job out of the simple range quickly. For City of Toronto properties, sump pump work can qualify under the City's Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program. As of June 2026, the City lists up to $6,650 in subsidies per property, covering up to 80% of the invoiced cost per eligible item; the expanded program starts May 1, 2026 and applies to eligible work completed on or after November 12, 2025. A sump pump with alarm and a sump pump battery backup are both eligible items, alongside backwater valves and alarms, a home plumbing assessment, and severance and capping of storm sewer or external weeping-tile connections. Adding a battery backup counts toward the same property cap, so plan both together. A sump pump manages groundwater. It does not stop sewer water from reversing through the drain system, and it does not waterproof a foundation wall by itself. If the basement has sewer backups, floor-drain backups, wall seepage, or water entering through cracks, the right plan may include a backwater valve, foundation waterproofing, weeping-tile work, drain inspection, or a battery backup system.

Test the system before storm season, keep the pit clear, watch the discharge path, and decide early whether the house also needs battery backup or additional flood-prevention layers. For older Toronto homes, a yearly check of the float, check valve, alarm, and discharge outlet is worth more than waiting for the first failed storm.

Older Toronto homes may have drainage layouts that worked for years but are less reliable during heavier storms, clogged weeping tile, or changing groundwater conditions. A sump pump makes sense when groundwater needs a controlled path away from the basement — and pairing it with a backwater valve, battery backup, or weeping-tile work often makes the difference during surcharged-sewer events.

The basin is the buried perforated reservoir the pump sits in, and its dimensions decide how the pump behaves. If the pit holds too little water, the float trips every minute or two and the motor and switch burn out from short-cycling; if it sits high or unsealed against the slab, groundwater pools around the outside instead of draining in. We set the basin level on a clean stone bed and route the weeping tile straight into the pit so the pump empties a real volume each cycle. A new basin gives the pump a clean, sized home — it does not fix groundwater pressure on the foundation.
